In the storied history of Indiana Hoosiers basketball, there have been countless legends to don the crimson and cream. From Isiah Thomas’s clutch performances to Calbert Cheaney’s scoring prowess, the debate over the greatest Hoosier of all time is a passionate one. But for many, there’s a clear and definitive answer: Scott May
While others may have left their mark with individual records or iconic moments, May’s legacy is built on something far more significant: an undefeated season and a national championship. As the leader of the legendary 1975-76 team, May captained the last Division I men’s basketball team to complete a perfect season, a feat that has remained unmatched for nearly five decades.
May’s greatness wasn’t just about the team’s success; it was also about his individual brilliance. In that historic 1976 season, he was a one-man wrecking crew, averaging 23.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He was rightfully recognized for his dominance, sweeping every major national player of the year award, including the Naismith College Player of the Year, the Adolph Rupp Trophy, and the Associated Press College Player of the Year.
His impact was also felt in his earlier seasons. As a two-time Consensus first-team All-American, he was a key piece of the 1974-75 team that went undefeated in the regular season, a run that was tragically cut short by a broken arm that sidelined him for the NCAA Tournament. Many believe that had he been healthy, the Hoosiers would have won back-to-back national titles.
After his remarkable college career, May went on to be the second overall pick in the 1976 NBA Draft and also won a gold medal with the United States Olympic team. But his true legacy will always be defined by his time in Bloomington. He was the heart and soul of the most dominant team in college basketball history, a leader who embodied the grit, talent, and unshakeable will to win that defines Hoosier basketball.
While others have a valid claim to the throne, no one can match the unique combination of individual accolades and unparalleled team success that Scott May achieved. He is, and will forever be, the benchmark for greatness in Indiana basketball.
