The New England Patriots are currently undergoing a significant transition following the departure of long-time head coach and de facto general manager Bill Belichick. Amidst these changes, the team faces the task of managing a considerable number of free agents. Among the notable names on the list of 24 players is offensive lineman Michael Onwenu. A sixth-round pick in the 2020 draft, Onwenu has proven to be one of the team’s most reliable performers, showcasing consistent quality play across various positions on the offensive line. Despite the Patriots having the means and incentive to retain him, recent reports from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggest that Onwenu might be on the verge of leaving the team.

It would not be surprising if Onwenu attracts interest from other teams across the league. Since joining New England, he has established himself as one of the league’s premier linemen, boasting starting experience and a proven track record at both guard and tackle positions.

During the 2023 season, Onwenu took on starting roles at both guard and tackle. Initially beginning the season as the Patriots’ right guard, he transitioned to right tackle in Week 7 to bolster a position that had struggled with inconsistency and uneven performance. Following Onwenu’s takeover, the entire right side of the offensive line showed improvement.

In total, he played in 15 games in 2023 and accumulated 850 offensive snaps, with 194 during his four starts at guard and 656 during his 11 starts at tackle. Pro Football Focus credited him with 23 quarterback disruptions, including three sacks.
