Under the leadership of new head coach Mike Macdonald, the Seattle Seahawks have made their first move by signing cornerback Lance Boykin to a Reserve/Future deal. Boykin, a 23-year-old defender who spent the previous season on the Seahawks’ practice squad, played in just one game.

This move comes as no surprise, given Macdonald’s defensive expertise, having led the Baltimore Ravens to become the top-ranked NFL defensive unit in 2023. The Ravens allowed an impressive 16.2 points per contest, in stark contrast to the Seahawks’ defense, which surrendered 23.6 points per game.

Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 200 pounds, Boykin, although undrafted in 2023, is considered a potential disruptor for receivers. He possesses the size and length to impact the catch point, making him an intriguing prospect under Macdonald’s coaching. However, Boykin will still need to compete for a roster spot during training camp.

Described by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein as a “long-legged, linear cornerback,” Boykin is noted for his disruptive abilities but may face challenges in keeping up with NFL route runners and preventing burners from surpassing him due to potential limitations in athletic fluidity and speed. Zierlein suggests that Boykin may find success in a zone-based cover scheme or even as a safety.

While the signing of Boykin is a positive step, the Seahawks are expected to make more significant moves in the offseason to enhance their roster. Speculation surrounds the possibility of Coach Macdonald attracting former Ravens players to Seattle during free agency, with notable names including linebacker Patrick Queen, defensive tackle Justin Madubuike, pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, and linebacker Kyle Van Noy.

Coach Macdonald emphasizes maintaining and advancing the existing culture built by former head coach Pete Carroll. He aims to “chase edges” with the players, emphasizing a sense of urgency and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Macdonald does not intend to overhaul what’s not broken but seeks to enhance the team’s performance and maintain a cutting-edge approach.
