The New York Mets could see a significant upgrade in their starting rotation during the upcoming offseason.

While the Mets focused on enhancing their rotation in the current offseason, they opted for smaller contracts aimed at players seeking bounce-back performances. Despite the availability of pitchers like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, the team refrained from making substantial investments.

With the Mets’ payroll expected to become clearer after the conclusion of the 2024 season, there is speculation that the organization will return to pursuing significant deals next offseason.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, one potential free agent target for the Mets is Corbin Burnes, the standout pitcher from the Baltimore Orioles.

Sherman speculates that with Steve Cohen’s involvement, financial competition between the Mets and Yankees is likely to intensify, potentially leading to more frequent clashes. There’s already talk of a potential bidding war between the two New York teams for Juan Soto in the upcoming offseason.

Regarding Corbin Burnes, unless there are lingering issues from a past arbitration dispute, which saw Burnes publicly criticize the Milwaukee Brewers, both the Mets and Yankees are expected to show interest in the right-handed pitcher.

Although the Mets were previously linked to Burnes as a trade target before he joined the Orioles, no deal materialized. As the 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner becomes a free agent next offseason, he appears to be a logical target for the Mets.
