The New York Jets are actively seeking talented additions to their roster during this offseason. They are exploring various avenues, including free agency, the trade market, and the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, to enhance their team.

Additionally, the Jets are exploring an unconventional international approach by showing interest in former Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit. Rees-Zammit, who spent seven years playing for Gloucester Rugby in England and represented Wales internationally, is considering a transition to the NFL. The 23-year-old recently had a successful “pro day” and is looking to kickstart his American Football career through the NFL’s International Player Pathway program. Both the Jets and the Cleveland Browns have arranged official meetings with Rees-Zammit, with the Jets meeting him on Friday following his pro day.

The International Player Pathway (IPP) program, which has been in existence since 2017, has produced notable NFL players such as Jordan Mailata of the Philadelphia Eagles and Efe Obada of the Washington Commanders.

Starting in 2024, all 32 NFL teams will have the opportunity to sign one player through the IPP program, effectively filling an unofficial 17th spot on their practice squad designated for international players.

Players in the IPP program are treated like any other practice squad member, with the option to be elevated to the active roster up to three times during the season before requiring a spot on the 53-man roster.

Additionally, IPP players do not count against the 90-man training camp roster limit, providing teams with flexibility in roster management.

Louis Rees-Zammit, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 209 pounds, showcased his athleticism with a 4.44-second 40-yard dash during his NFL workout. While his specific NFL position remains undecided, his style of play has drawn comparisons to Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel.

The New York Jets have previous experience with rugby-to-NFL transitions, having signed Australian tight end Hayden Smith in 2012 and 2023, as well as Australian rugby standout Valentine Holmes through the IPP program in 2019.

Rees-Zammit represents the latest athlete attempting this crossover, and there is considerable excitement surrounding his potential as the Jets’ international player for the upcoming season.
