The San Francisco 49ers have enlisted Joshua Dobbs as their backup quarterback behind star player Brock Purdy, replacing Sam Darnold.

Dobbs, originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017, has changed teams nine times since departing from his initial franchise, never staying with one team for more than a year.

Despite having only 14 career starts, Dobbs brings considerable experience to the table. His ability to quickly adapt to new environments, coaches, and playbooks, honed through his journey across different teams in the league, makes him an ideal candidate for the backup position.

During the 2023 season, Dobbs transitioned from being a backup for the Cleveland Browns to becoming the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, and subsequently moved on to start for the Minnesota Vikings, all within a span of about three months. Despite the rapid changes, Dobbs believes the experience has been enriching and educational.

Now focusing on his new team in the Bay Area, Dobbs eagerly anticipates firsthand experiencing the remarkable journey of Purdy, despite knowing he will serve as the backup quarterback to the Niners’ starting QB.

“At the end of the day, he’s a winner on the field and plays efficient football, which is all you can ask for,” Dobbs expressed, as reported by 49ersWebzone.com. “So, that’s what I’m most looking forward to—being able to offer my insights based on my experiences throughout the league and being prepared to take on whatever role arises this coming year.

“Being part of that coaching environment, alongside such a talented player in Purdy, and within a team that prioritizes consistency, I believe will greatly benefit me. I’m excited to contribute and assist the team in any way possible for the upcoming season.”

“First and foremost, I feel blessed for another chance in free agency, but I’m seeking some stability, without a doubt,” Dobbs expressed on Afternoon Drive on The Fan. “Last year was quite a whirlwind, in a positive sense. There was a lot of personal growth and ample opportunities, like the chance to start week in and week out and compete at a high level.”

“However, there was also a fair amount of uncertainty in those circumstances. Therefore, I’m searching for an opportunity that offers stability, a chance to compete consistently and prove myself week after week. I’m also hoping for an environment where I can continue to develop within an organization, regardless of where that may be.”

“I’ve demonstrated that I can perform well even in the most unpredictable situations. So now, I’m eager to find a stable environment where I can consistently showcase my abilities and strive to be the best version of myself.”
