Former captain Dylan Grimes and midfielder Jacob Hopper are set to make their return from injury for Richmond in Round 7 following the team’s bye in Round 6. This comes as a timely boost for the Tigers, who are currently facing challenges due to injuries to key players such as Tim Taranto, Dion Prestia, and Jack Ross.

Hopper’s comeback will particularly fortify Richmond’s midfield, where coach Yze has had to rely on young talent in the absence of experienced players. Yze expressed his gratitude for having Hopper back, highlighting his invaluable experience and leadership qualities.

“Dylan and Jacob will be back on the field, which is fantastic news. Having leaders like them returning will not only provide experience but also contribute to the team’s organization,” Yze stated on Tuesday.

He added, “Both players have been eager to get back on the field and contribute to the team. Their presence will greatly benefit our younger players, and having them back on the field this weekend will be a significant boost for our club.”

“Melbourne is particularly strong around stoppages, led by their captain. Having Jacob Hopper back this week is a blessing for us. He brings leadership and experience, which has a positive impact throughout our club,” Yze commented.

“Our midfield has been hit hard by injuries, and while young players have stepped up, Hopper’s return will be significant. He had a great week on the training track, and we’ve focused on improving our stoppage and clearance work after last week’s performance.”

Additionally, Richmond may consider including young flanker Sam Banks for the Melbourne clash following Jayden Short’s recent calf injury. Both Banks and fringe ruckman Sam Naismith participated in the team’s captain’s run ahead of Round 7, despite not featuring in the previous game against West Coast.

Although Samson Ryan performed well with four goals in the VFL, he may have to wait another week for a senior recall. Yze indicated that forward options Jacob Koschitzke and Mykelti Lefau, along with Naismith, could be prioritized against Melbourne. However, Ryan’s strong form has him pushing for selection.

“He’s putting forward a strong case. Discussions regarding our forward line structure, including the possibility of playing two rucks, are ongoing and will be finalized today,” Yze explained.

Richmond will announce their final 23-man squad for Round 7 at 6:20pm (AEST) on Tuesday evening.
