In Thursday’s matchup, the Philadelphia Phillies’ ace Zack Wheeler presented the Reds’ lineup with a formidable challenge. Wheeler, widely regarded as one of the premier pitchers in the league, demonstrated his prowess by limiting the Reds to just one hit across six shutout innings at Great American Ball Park. The Reds had a significant opportunity to score in the third inning, loading the bases with two walks and a single. However, Spencer Steer’s fly ball was caught at the warning track in right field, allowing Wheeler to guide the Phillies to a commanding 5-0 victory over the Reds.

Throughout his six innings on the mound, Reds starting pitcher Nick Martinez faced considerable pressure, with runners frequently occupying base paths. Despite navigating through numerous tight spots, Martinez managed to limit the damage, aside from a challenging four-run third inning orchestrated by the Phillies. However, the pivotal moment arrived when Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper, returning to action after a period of paternity leave, delivered a decisive two-run home run, ultimately shifting the momentum of the game in favor of the Phillies.

After a successful homestand, during which the Reds (14-11) secured victories in five out of seven games, they now embark on a challenging six-game road trip. Their journey begins with a three-game series against the reigning World Champion Texas Rangers (13-13, 6-7 at home), commencing Friday night. Following this series, the Reds will face off against the San Diego Padres for three games before returning to Great American Ball Park.

In the series opener against the Rangers, Graham Aschraft (3-1, 5.24 ERA) is slated to take the mound for the Reds, where he will go head-to-head against the Rangers’ ace Nathan Eovaldi (1-2, 3.20).

The Reds had essentially one chance against Phillies ace Zack Wheeler Thursday afternoon, but Spencer Steer lined out in the gap with the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning.
