The B.C. Lions orchestrated a major move in the CFL offseason by securing the return of veteran Canadian defensive lineman Christian Covington, although the club didn’t instigate the deal.

According to co-general manager and director of player personnel Neil McEvoy, Covington, the team’s fifth-round pick from the 2015 CFL Draft, initiated discussions a couple of months ago to explore his options after the NFL Draft.

While the Lions had monitored Covington’s career, it was the first time they seriously entertained the prospect of adding the nine-year NFL veteran. They encouraged Covington not to commit until he was fully prepared, recognizing the challenges of professional football on either side of the border.

After the NFL Draft concluded, Covington reached out to express his readiness and desire to make an impact with the Lions. This prompted a swift agreement between both parties to bring him back to his hometown.

Contrary to speculation, Covington emphasized that his signing isn’t a short-term endeavor but rather a commitment to playing into his mid-thirties, akin to his father Grover Covington’s illustrious career.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Covington spent nine years in the NFL with various teams, accruing significant playing time and showcasing his talents on the field. Despite his age, Covington believes he still has much to offer, especially after spending the previous season on the Chargers’ practice squad.

His return to the Lions comes at a pivotal juncture, coinciding with the franchise’s hosting of the 111th Grey Cup and undergoing significant changes in the defensive line department. Covington’s arrival injects experience and leadership into the team, offering guidance to younger players and filling a void left by departing veterans.

While veteran NFL additions in the CFL can sometimes be uncertain, Covington’s high level of commitment and experience make him a notable exception. His presence is expected to bolster the Lions both on and off the field.

With preparations for the 2024 season underway, the Lions anticipate Covington’s contributions when they open their campaign on Sunday, June 9 in Toronto, with rookies set to report to camp on Wednesday, May 8.
