The beginning of July has been highly successful for Brian Kelly and the LSU football team on the recruiting front.

In just two days, the Tigers secured commitments from three defensive linemen, addressing a critical need for their 2025 recruiting class.

Four-star pass rusher Damien Shanklin chose LSU over Alabama and Ohio State last Friday. The Indianapolis native is ranked as the 110th best overall prospect and the 10th-best edge rusher in this year’s class, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Among the 15 players committed to LSU’s 2025 recruiting class so far, Shanklin is the third-highest rated prospect, following five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood and four-star tailback Harlem Berry. Kelly and LSU defensive line coach Bo Davis’s success in landing Shanklin was amplified by the addition of two more defensive linemen.

Davis also secured a commitment from four-star defensive lineman Brandon Brown from Texas on Friday. Brown, who stands at 6-2 and weighs 286 pounds, had been committed to the Longhorns since December 2023, when Davis was the defensive line coach in Austin. The Melbourne, Florida native has now decided to follow Davis to Baton Rouge.

Additionally, Lufkin, Texas native Zion Williams committed to LSU last Thursday, choosing the Tigers over offers from Alabama, Texas A&M, TCU, Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas, Tennessee, and others. Williams is a four-star defensive lineman ranked inside the top 300 nationally and listed as the 33rd best recruit at his position in the 2025 class. Standing at 6-4 and 295 pounds, Williams is projected to play defensive tackle, a position of need for LSU this year.

LSU has climbed back up to No. 6 in 247Sports’ 2025 recruiting class rankings after previously holding the No. 1 spot. The recent decommitments of wide receiver Dakorien Moore, who committed to Oregon last week, and cornerback Jaboree Antonie, contributed to the Tigers’ drop in the rankings.
