The Oklahoma City Thunder might find value in exploring the trade market for reinforcement, particularly in the center position. Recent reports indicate that the Atlanta Hawks are open to trading Clint Capela, and the Thunder could consider making a move for the talented center. Capela’s primary impact, especially for the Thunder, would be his strong rebounding ability. Although he led the league in rebounds per game during the 2020-21 season, his current average of 10.5 rebounds still places him among the top performers. The Hawks, despite being 25th in defensive rebounding percentage, have excelled in offensive rebounding, largely attributed to Capela. Considering the Thunder’s struggles in both defensive and offensive rebounding, Capela could significantly enhance their performance in this area. In particular, his average of 4.9 offensive rebounds per game could translate to increased second-chance points for Oklahoma City, addressing their 29th ranking in that category. While Capela might not notably contribute to the Thunder’s already strong defense, his physical presence, weighing 256 pounds, could be beneficial in potential playoff matchups against formidable big men like Nikola Jokic or Domantas Sabonis. However, acquiring Capela for the Thunder might pose challenges.

Acquiring Clint Capela from the Atlanta Hawks could present some challenges for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Capela has two years and $42 million remaining on his contract, requiring the Thunder to include Davis Bertans to match the salary. Additional assets, such as a young player and a draft pick, might be necessary to facilitate the deal. While Oklahoma City aims to retain valuable assets, Atlanta could seek more in return for Capela. Considering that Capela’s contract will be off the books before potential extensions kick in, this could be a strategic move for the Thunder. However, as Capela has been a consistent starter since the 2016-17 season, he may need to embrace a backup role with the Thunder. If willing to accept this role, Capela’s experience and rebounding prowess could make him an ideal player to contribute valuable minutes when Chet Holmgren is not on the court.
