The Minnesota Vikings have brought in a fresh quarterbacks coach for the 2024 season. On Tuesday, the team revealed that Josh McCown will assume the role of quarterbacks coach. Chris O’Hara, who previously held the position of quarterbacks coach, has transitioned to the role of pass game specialist for the team.

McCown’s appointment as quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings marks his second stint in such a role in the NFL. Previously, he was enlisted to join Frank Reich’s staff with the Carolina Panthers. However, his tenure was cut short when Reich was dismissed following a challenging start to the season.

Having enjoyed an illustrious 18-season career in the NFL, McCown was renowned for his invaluable veteran presence both on and off the field. This reputation, coupled with his leadership qualities, made him a sought-after figure in coaching circles. In fact, McCown even garnered consideration for an NFL head coaching position at one point.

Interestingly, McCown and current Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell crossed paths during their time with the Cleveland Browns in 2015. O’Connell, who was then serving as Cleveland’s quarterbacks coach in his inaugural NFL coaching season, worked alongside McCown, who was part of the Browns’ quarterback roster at the time. Now, as O’Connell assumes the head coaching role with the Vikings, McCown will step into the role of quarterbacks coach under his leadership.
